Built-in lid thermometers on many grills are off by 50 degrees or more. This dial replaces them with a calibrated, easy-to-read face and a long stainless stem that reaches down near grate level, where the meat actually sits.
Drill a small hole, push the stem through and tighten the wing nut behind it. The 3-inch face reads from 50 to 550 F, with a calibration nut on the back that lets you check it in boiling water. Wipe the glass clean of smoke film now and then.
